openSUSE Logo Novell has released a first beta for version 2.0 of its openSUSE Build Service (OBS). According to openSUSE Program Manager Andreas Jaeger, the development release is feature complete and that new features will go into the next major release planned for the end of 2010.

Version 2.0 of the openSUSE Build Service features a new web user interface (UI) that is described as "Tailor-Made for Packagers". The UI enhancements are aimed at providing better and faster access to projects, packages and metadata. The developers hope that the UI improvements will improve efficiency and add that the addition of anonymous access, which allows for access to packages and projects without log-in, will make it even easier to collaborate with other developers. As with all development and beta releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

The openSUSE Build Service is the same service that the openSUSE developers use to create the openSUSE 11.2 release. The Build Service is not limited just to openSUSE though and it makes it possible to create packages for a variety of processor platforms and major distributions, including CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, SUSE Linux Enterprise, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. The final version of openSUSE Build Service 2.0 is scheduled to be released on the 10th of June, 2010.
