DNSCrypt arrives for Windows

OpenDNS has announced that the previously Mac-only DNSCrypt is now available for Windows. DNSCrypt was originally released in December 2011 as a preview of a system to secure the "last mile" of DNS, encrypting all the DNS traffic between a user's system and the DNS server. DNSCrypt is a variant of DNSCurve and goes further than DNS Security Extensions' (DNSSEC) authentication mechanisms by encrypting the DNS requests and responses. OpenDNS says that DNSCrypt adds "significant privacy and security to your internet connection", especially when on public Wi-Fi networks.

A Windows version was promised at that time and has now been delivered. The software is still a technology preview and the server-side is only implemented by OpenDNS's free service. It is though, according to OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch, already in use by over 10,000 Mac users. The software is available as binary releases from the OpenDNS download page or as source code from the company's GitHub repository; DNSCrypt is published under a ISC style licence.
