Google to scan for malicious apps in Chrome Web Store

Google is trying to better protect the users of its Chrome Web Store from malicious browser apps and extensions. As is already the case in the Google Play Android apps store, content uploaded to the Chrome Web Store will now also be automatically scanned for malware.

Google recently informed developers that uploads would experience a slight delay, with scanning taking from just a few minutes up to an hour. During the scan, before an item is officially published, developers can cancel the process and withdraw their program.

Browser extensions – with the potential to monitor surfing behaviour, steal cookies and manipulate web pages – should also be considered a serious security risk. The Facebook trojan JS/Febipos.A, for example, took over Facebook accounts in Brazil, spreading video advertisements and links in the names of the victims. In 2011, the Super Mario World 1 and 2 games offered in the Web Store required access to all data from any sites a user visited.
