PacketFence NAC 3.0 brings new features, hardware support

The Inverse development team has announced the release of version 3.0 of the PacketFence open source network access control (NAC) system. The major update includes support for RedHat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6) and CentOS 6, as well as support for new hardware from Avaya/Nortel, D-Link, LG-Ericsson and Netgear.

PacketFence 3.0 features a redesigned captive portal that's "more modern and professional" and easier to use for both guest users and administrators. Guest management has been improved to allow users to easily add their devices to the network: guests accounts can be self-provisioned and validated by email or text messages (SMS). Support for bulk creation of guests and importing guests is also included.

Other changes include RADIUS Accounting to track node bandwidth usage, the option to view log files from within the Web Administration interface and a simplified Apache configuration, as well as translation updates and "a ton of bug fixes". PHP 5.3.x support has been improved and support for the 2.9.x branch of the Snort network intrusion detection system has been added.
