Report: Japanese defence contractor hacked

Manufacturer of missile, rocket engine, submarine and nuclear power equipment, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has reportedly founds its network hacked. A Reuters report says that Japanese newspaper Yomiuri reported that information had been stolen during the attack. A company representative confirmed that there had been an attack but not that data had been stolen.

"We've found out that some system information such as IP addresses have been leaked and that's creepy enough", said the MHI representative, according to a Reuters report, adding, "We can't rule out small possibilities of further information leakage but so far crucial data about our products or technologies have been kept safe."

According to the company, it first noticed the attack on 11 August when 80 virus-infected systems were found at its Tokyo headquarters and at manufacturing and R&D sites. There were multiple infections, according to Yomimuri, with over eight different kinds of malware on each machine, including keyloggers. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the largest defence contractor in Japan, responsible for a quarter of Japan's Ministry of Defence spending.
