Improving OpenOffice

The new OpenOffice User Feedback Program automatically collects data that allows the developers to modify the future development of OpenOffice accordingly. It time stamps and saves a user's menu accesses and buttons clicks, as well as information on font size and menu/dialog fonts. Document contents, passwords and paths are not included.

Stored locally in the user's OpenOffice directory at temp/Feedback, the collected data is sent to a remote OpenOffice server, where the senders' IP addresses are deleted. Wary users can always disable the User Feedback Program using the "Options" dialogue in "OpenOffice/User Feedback". More information about the OpenOffice User Feedback Program is available online.

Users can choose to opt out of the OpenOffice User Feedback Program via the "Options" dialogue.

Improved file locking in heterogeneous networks

Previous versions of OpenOffice have already locked documents that are opened across a network. This is to prevent accidental overwrites of the last actions of the user who first opened the document. If a user tries to open a document locked this way, OpenOffice will deny access and offer to open a copy of the document instead.

In the current version, the file locking feature has been given a technical overhaul to ensure its reliable operation in heterogeneous networks.

Overlining text

The OpenOffice developers have improved and extended character formatting. A new feature is the "overlining" of characters and numbers. Overlining offers the same options as underlining: single, double, bold, dotted or wave. The overline feature can be found in the format character dialogue on the "Font Effect" tab.
