5,000 Refugee children in Gaza Strip to get OLPC Laptop
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) has announced that it will be donating 5,000 OLPC laptops to the United Nations Relieve and Workers Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugee children in the Gaza Strip. OLPC is a non-profit organisation who's mission is to provide children across the world access to modern education by providing laptops that they can use for learning.
“Given the recent damage done to schools, in what is already a very poor and very isolated part of the world, it is more important than ever to give these Palestinian children access to rugged, connected laptops that will open up worlds of knowledge and hope to each of them,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop per Child. “It is our hope that this small but important donation will spur others to act now.”
The announcement comes after recent cutbacks at OLPC, which saw the staff cut by 50 per cent and the remaining 32 employees facing salary reductions to keep OLPC running.
