Android's leading version now "Jelly Bean"

After months of waiting for Gingerbread, Android 2.3, to be toppled from its position of most widely used version of Android, the combined forces of Android 4.1 and 4.2 have taken the top spot in the charts. As both are code-named "Jelly Bean", and generally treated as the same thing with minor differences in their flavours, it is reasonable to award the top spot to their combined numbers in the Android charts.

Android 4.1 has 32.3% (up 3.3% from last month) and Android 4.2 has 5.6% (up 1.6% over last month) which together gives them a 37.9% share of the visits to the Google Play Store. Gingerbread now clocks in at 34.1%, down 2.4%, and Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, is also down 2.3%, from 25.6% to 23.3%. Other Android versions, such as Donut (1.6) and Honeycomb (3.x) only just make the chart at 0.1% each, while 2.1 Eclair (1.4%) and 2.2 Froyo (3.1%) barely register in the numbers.

The latest numbers show Google making good progress in getting more devices to an Android 4.x version. In total, Android 4.x has a 61.2% share of the devices connecting to the Play store, just 5% short of being on two thirds of all Android devices. The Android Dashboard numbers were compiled using data from the two weeks leading up to 8 July.
