Another Italian province mandates more use of open source
According to Joinup, the European Commission's open source portal, the Italian province of Trentino has approved a law that instructs public administrations to prepare migration plans to switch to open source software. Additionally, the region's council wants public administrations to use open standards wherever possible.
Michele Nardelli, one of the councillors who introduced the bill, says that the move to open source software is important for the region since, especially in the area of research, "this type of software will eliminate barriers, and will give all users the same level of access and rights." The law includes provisions for schools to switch to open source as well and encourages employees of the government to participate in the development of open source software.
This is the second time this month that an Italian province has passed a law mandating that the public sector use more open source software. Earlier, the region of Puglia passed a similar law.
