Firefox to become IBM's new default browser

Firefox logo In a post on his blog, Bob Sutor, Vice President Open Source and Linux at IBM, has announced that Firefox is to go onto the list of default common applications at IBM. Although the company's employees won't be forced to use Firefox, those who haven't installed it yet will be strongly encouraged to use it as their default browser. All new computers at IBM will be provisioned with Firefox.

Sutor says that Firefox stands out due to its standards conformity – one of IBM's key strategies. Firefox is maintained as an open source project by an open community, which also benefits its security, said Sutor. The executive added that Firefox is extensible and can be easily customised for particular applications and organisations. Last but not least, Firefox is innovative and has breathed new life into the browser market, said Sutor.

The Firefox community also has another reason to celebrate. On Thursday, Firefox add-on downloads crossed the 2 billion marker, further emphasising the popularity of the browser and its extensions.
