First MeeGo code release

The MeeGo developers have released the first code of their mobile Linux distribution as promised. The code release is designed to allow developers to get their earliest possible first exposure to MeeGo and begin collaborating on development.

MeeGo is the result of a collaboration announced in February between Nokia and Intel in a Linux Foundation project which combines Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin mobile Linux platforms into a unified and common mobile Linux distribution. The code has been compiled and is available to download for the ARM based Nokia N900, the Intel Atom based netbooks and Intel's Moorestown Atom based handset. However, anyone expecting expecting to get a full glimpse of the new operating system will be disappointed; the code currently boots to a terminal, as the "MeeGo User Experiences" are not yet included.

What is included is the most of the operating system up to and including the middleware layers. Over the next month, the developers plan to add the missing elements in preparation for a first release of MeeGo in May. The MeeGo team have also opened a developers wiki, a Git repository for source code and a Bugzilla page for tracking bugs and issues.
