First beta version of GNOME 3.2

The GNOME Project has released the first of two beta versions of GNOME 3.2. The pre-release version, designated GNOME 3.1.90, comes just a few days after the user interface freeze, which, along with the beta, was recently put back a week to allow time to incorporate further modifications.

The interface in GNOME 3.2 (which has a scheduled release date of 28 September) should therefore mirror that of the beta. One new feature in the beta is web apps, which integrate frequently used web sites into the desktop as web applications. The beta also uses a newly released version of GNOME Shell, which among other improvements, includes three enhancements – an onscreen keyboard, a contact search feature and cover art support for notifications – developed by students as part of Google's Summer of Code.

As well as releasing the beta, the GNOME development team has also updated many of the wiki pages on GNOME 3.2 features. The new file preview feature, the GNOME 3 styled login screen and the 'fix annoying things' list are all now considered complete. Tablet support is designated as "ongoing", while IBus integration and the application menu have been put back to GNOME 3.4.
