The flashrom developers have announced the release of version 0.9.5 of their open source software for reading, verifying and rewriting the flash chips found on the mainboards and on networking/graphics cards within systems. The new version is able to access chips over the SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) via the Linux kernel's own SPI driver which has been part of the kernel for some time.

Flashrom can now also handle AMD's Hudson chip set, Intel'sTunnelcreek (found with chip sets such as the Atom E600) and the Bifferboard. Its new SFDP (Serial Flash Discoverable Parameters) support allows the program to support chips that it doesn't know yet; however, this feature has a known problem which the developers plan to fix in version 0.9.5.1.

Flashrom can be built on Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, DragonFly BSD, OpenBSD, Nexenta, Solaris, Mac OS X and DOS and is licensed under the GPLv2.
