Fraunhofer FOKUS axes BerliOS open source portal
On 31 December, the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) is to close BerliOS (Berlin Open Source), its open source software (OSS) repository. According to an announcement made on Friday 30 September, the institute finds itself compelled to take this step as it has been unable to find a successor or to secure further funding.
The project, which was founded in 2000, supports open source development and aims to bridge the gap between users, developers and software vendors. More than 4,710 projects have been hosted on the repository, which has 50,000 registered users and over 2.6 million file downloads each month.
FOKUS is advising developers to export their BerliOS projects to another repository. The institute has posted instructions for exporting project data from BerliOS and importing it into other platforms on its web site.
