openSUSE 12.1 Beta arrives for testing

Following a more than one week delay, the openSUSE project has announced the release of a first beta of version 12.1 of its openSUSE operating system. Originally called Milestone 6, this release is aimed at developers, testers and early adopters, and was reclassified as a beta in September; this was done in order to give it a higher profile in the hope that it would receive more extensive testing. It will be followed by two release candidates (RCs); the final version is scheduled to arrive on 11 November 2011.

As is usual at this stage of development, the programmers have focused on addressing bugs found in the previous milestones and improving the overall stability of the distribution; no new features have been added. According to the most annoying bugs page, the beta release still contains a problem that causes 32-bit DVD installations to fail after a software install error.

The Beta 1 release of openSUSE 12.1 is available to download for 32- or 64-bit systems from the project's web site. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find. The current stable release of openSUSE is version 11.4 from March of this year.
