FreeBSD logo The FreeBSD developers, running around a month behind schedule, have released the second beta of FreeBSD 9.0. According to Ken Smith's announcement, "BETA 1 and some other factors caused a lot of activity" and the developers plan to rework the schedule to reflect the current state of development.

Improvements in FreeBSD 9.0, which appeared in the first beta, include a new Clang/LLVM based compilation system, wider use of Dtrace, support for over 32 CPUs, USB 3.0, more SMP scalable TCP/IP and an updated ZFS. For more details, consult Ivan Voras' "What's cooking for FreeBSD 9".

Beyond testing the enhancements which appeared in FreeBSD 9.0 Beta 1, the developers are hoping that testers will spend some time trying out the new installer system and are encouraging fresh installs. To encourage this more, updates to beta 2 are not currently available. As always though, production use of development software like this is not recommended.

FreeBSD 9.0 beta 2 can be downloaded from most of the project's mirror sites and is licensed under the two-clause BSD licence.
