GParted update brings refresh of live CD partitioning tools
Following the recent release of GParted 0.13.0, there has been a new release of the project's own GParted Live distribution, as well as one from the Parted Magic developer. GParted Live 0.13.0-1 includes several important, and in one case long-awaited, bug fixes and Parted Magic 2012_07_13 has been updated with new packages and an improved icon theme.
GParted 0.13.0 can now detect differences between the sizes of a filesystem and its partitions, helping users to identify unallocated space within partitions and enabling the program to suggest how to make use of it. This feature has been requested by users since 2007 and has now finally been delivered. Another important bug that has been fixed is a problem where resizing an extended partition could lead to overlapping partitions.
Along with these improvements, the new version of the GParted Live CD also includes a desktop icon for its browser and keyboard shortcuts for the Fluxbox menu that make keyboard-only operation easier. GParted Live 0.13.0-1 can be downloaded from Sourceforge. A full list of updated packages is available from the same location. The source code for GParted 0.13.0 itself is also available from Sourceforge.
Parted Magic 2012_07_13 benefits from several updated packages, including the newest GParted release, and includes a refreshed Tango icon theme that improves the appearance of the distribution throughout. More information on the release and details on the included packages can be found on the Parted Magic web site, which also includes downloadable images of the distribution. Patrick Verner, the developer behind Parted Magic, had promised more frequent releases as part of his move to work on the project full time.
