Growl 1.4 overhauls Applications Tab

Ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference taking place this week, Growl Project Lead Christopher Forsythe has announced the release of version 1.4 of the Growl open source notification system for Mac OS X. One of the most visible changes in this major update is to the Applications tab, which has been completely redesigned in order to make it easier to use.

The settings for the Rollup window, which shows users' previous notifications that they missed while away from their systems, has been moved to its own separate tab. Other parts of the Preference Pane user interface have also been overhauled: new on/off slider switches have been added, as has keyboard support for the position picker.

The Applications tab has been redesigned to make it easier to use Improvements to networking, where users can receive notifications from other networked systems running Growl, include support for subscribing to all applications on a remote machine, better authentication and fixes for a crashing bug related to address data resolution. The developers also note that adding a new display, such as when connecting a running laptop to an external monitor, no longer requires users to restart Growl.

Further information about the update, including a list of bug fixes, can be found in a post on the Growl blog and in the Mac App Store description; at the time of writing, the version history has yet to be updated to reflect the new release. Growl 1.4 is available to download for $1.99 (£1.49) from the Mac App Store for Mac OS X 10.7 or later; users that previously purchased version 1.3 can upgrade for free. Alternatively, users can build Growl from source, which is made available under the terms of a 3-clause BSD licence.
