Jaiku to become JaikuEngine
The Jaiku developers have announced that Jaiku is now being served from the Google App Engine, which is the first step at making it "a federated, open source microblogging platform." The customisable platform is a part of Google and is maintained by volunteer Google engineers in their spare time.
In January of this year Google originally announced that they would be releasing Jaiku as an open source project. The new platform will now be called JaikuEngine and differs from Jaiku in that feed fetching and international SMS are no longer available. While the core SMS feature will remain for the US only, the international SMS feature had some scaling issues and was removed due to financial reasons. Using the new JaikuEngine API, developers can create clients that can take advantage of features such as presence, allowing users to add location details to their posts on mobile devices.
The open source JaikuEngine code and more details will be available "in the coming days" according to the Jaikido blog post.
