OSI certifies European open source licence

The Open Source Initiative (OSI), custodian of the Open Source Definition (OSD), has certified the European Union Public Licence (EUPL) as complying with the OSD. Karel De Vriendt, head of the European Commission's eGovernment programme, says this certification will make it easier to persuade European governments to place their own self-developed open source software under the EUPL.

The EUPL is most similar to the Open Software License, and was drawn up by the European Commission to provide a single licence, validated in all member states and available in those member states' languages. Martin Michlmayr, one of the OSI board members said "For the first time we have a license available in all European languages, valid everywhere and with all translations legally scrutinised."

The new licence is compatible with the GPL v2, the Open Software License (OSL) 2.1 and 3.0, the Common Public License 1.0, and the Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0.
