Kicking off Debian Squeeze

Adeodato Simó from the Debian release team has officially launched the development of the next stable release of Debian, code named "Squeeze" and has announced the general principles for its development. The ultimate goal of the Debian project Release Managers is to help the project deliver a release that developers can be proud of. Additionally, the Release Managers want to maintain a balanced time line to satisfy both the demands of developers and users.

Simó openly admits that the goals are "ambitious" and goes on to say that they "truly believe in it." In order to achieve the goals, the Release Managers will need to speak with the developers and developer groups to find where problems exist and decide what can be done to help solve them. Overall the release team want to have a cooperative and active group of developers that will post suggestions and criticisms alike, helping to make the process more open. In the past there was some debate over what the role of a Release Manager is and, with the Squeeze release, they are hoping to address some of these criticisms.

Developers are encouraged to speak freely and voice their concerns, especially relating to the Lenny development, so as to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future – even if that would require the introduction of new protocols.

A few days ago, the Debian Policy team provided the new Package Policy which includes the first round of policy changes for the Squeeze release. A Squeeze release schedule has not yet been made available.
