Nokia has released the Maemo 5 Alpha SDK, which features a new user interface framework for application developers. The SDK can run on Nokia's range of internet tablets (N800 and N810). It is based upon the upcoming version of Maemo, codenamed Fremantle. The roadmap does not say when a final release is due ("Final release when ready"), but a beta of the SDK is planned for May.

The SDK will allow Maemo developers to begin to adapt their applications for Fremantle/Maemo. Developers will be able to make use of APIs which enable location aware applications, give information on cities, manage time and time-zones, trigger and control vibrations and allow programs to react to changes in screen orientation.

Maemo developers can look at the source of Maemopad which has been adapted to the new SDK, but are warned that the APIs are still in a state of flux. Also missing are user interface components for multitasking applications, so the current SDK "resembles a single-application environment". Full release notes are available.
