MeeGo Handset experience previewed, Moblin/Maemo merger complete
Source: MeeGo
The MeeGo developers have announced the "Day 1" release of MeeGo for handsets, specifically smartphones; the previous MeeGo releases have focused on netbooks and the user experience on those devices. With the preview of the MeeGo Handset version, the developers are showing the current progress on both MeeGo 1.1 and the handset user experience. The developers say this "Day 1" release also marks the completion of the merger of Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo with all the major architecture decisions and technology selections having been made.
The "Day 1" handset release includes the Qt UI framework, MeeGo Touch UI and a subset of the handset "reference UI" and applications. These applications include a status bar, home and lock screens, an application launcher, virtual keyboard and basic applications including a dialer, SMS, a browser based on Mozilla's Fennec, contacts and a photo viewer. The release has been adapted for Intel's Moorestown Atom-based handsets and the ARM-based Nokia N900 and images are available for both platforms. MeeGo 1.1, for Netbooks and Handsets, is currently expected to be completed and released in October.
