After nine months of development Version 1.8 of the open source JavaScript user interface framework JQueryUI has been released. It includes two new widgets, Button and Autocomplete. The new Buttons can not only theme HTML elements such submit or button links, but are able to encapsulate various other HTML elements allowing them to be used for radio and check boxes.

The Autocomplete widget allows the use of either static JavaScript arrays or dynamic data retrieved from a server to populate suggestions for auto-completion. In the case of server sourced data, the widget can just be given a URL that returns JSON data. A new Position method has been added which allows all widgets to be positioned relative to another DOM object.

Current users of the framework will need to migrate their existing codebases as there are a number of incompatible changes made to the library. The dual licensed (MIT or GPLv2) code is available from the project's page and requires jQuery 1.4 or later
