EclipseCon 2010: Amazon introduces Java SDK for web services
At EclipseCon 2010 Amazon has announced an update for its toolkit for Eclipse and introduced the Amazon Web Services Software Development Kit (AWS SDK). The new SDK provides developers with a single jar file to manage connecting to Amazon's range of services, with the Amazon provided code handling the low-level plumbing of authentication, retrying and error-handling. The library comes with support for the Amazon's EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), Auto Scaling, CloudWatch, Elastic Load Balancing, Virtual Private Cloud, SimpleDB, S3 (Simple Storage Service), Simple Queue Service, Relational Database Service and Elastic Map Reduce.
The update to the Eclipse toolkit allows for the swift creation of new projects using the AWS SDK or for the new SDK to be used in existing projects and offers support for the development, debugging and deployment of Java applications which use Amazon's range of cloud based services. SimpleDB users will find tools to allow them to create, edit and query their databases and EC2 users will be able to make use of management tools for their cloud based virtual machines. Both the Eclipse toolkit and the AWS SDK are available to download (toolkit, AWS) as open source under an Apache 2.0 Licence and require at least Java 5 to run.
