As previously announced last year, Grau Data has released Open Archive under the Affero General Public License (AGPL). Open Archive is based on Grau Data's Archive Manager which is distributed under a proprietary licence. The open source version, however, lacks a feature needed to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act because "publishing the source code would be detrimental to" the legal requirements. Open Archive also has yet to be certified by independent software vendors (ISV).

Open Archive can archive millions of files and can handle an archive capacity of several petabytes. The software works with several storage platforms including hard drives and tapes. It communicates with Windows and Unix servers via CIFS or NFS and does not require a proprietary API. An Open Archive Virtual Machine and source code for Red Hat and Suse are available to download. Source documentation is available for developers.
