Open Source Edition of syslog-ng 3.0 released

BalaBit, the company behind the alternative Syslog Daemon syslog-ng, has released version 3.0 of their Open Source Edition (OSE). The system logging software sends encrypted log messages over the network to a central logging server, where they can be filtered and stored in a database.

The free open source version now supports the "Syslog Standard Protocol and Message Format" from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The software can also parse contents of messages into their various parts, such as source host, application and priority, to enable filtering and rewriting. The log data can now be directly sent to databases like MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL and SQLite.

The Premium Edition (PE) of syslog-ng 3.0, a commercial parallel fork of syslog-ng which partly funds development of the open source version, has been out for two months. It includes several additional features such as encrypted log storage and a Windows agent to collect log data from Windows systems.
