The FFmpeg project developers have released version 0.5 of FFmpeg, which includes a number of updates and enhancements. FFmpeg is a free tool and library collection used to record, convert and stream audio and video files in various formats. It is used by several popular open source software projects including VLC media player, MPlayer, Perian and others.

The new release, codenamed "half-way to world domination A.K.A. the belligerent blue bike shed", includes a number of new audio and video file decoders and encoders. New decoders in the release include RealVideo RV30/40, Flash Screen Video, Atrac3, MLP/TrueHD and Monkey's Audio. The FFmpeg release now includes built in support for Nvidia VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix), ffserver fixes, a new meta-data API, cleaner code and new multiplexer / demultiplexers.

FFmpeg is released under the LGPL or GPL depending upon the configuration used. More details about the update can be found in the changelog and a full list of features can be found in the main FFmpeg doc.
