OpenSUSE gets an Upstart
The openSUSE developers have released the fourth milestone of openSUSE 11.3. The most important development in this release is the shift from booting with the traditional System V init scheme to the newer Upstart system. Many other distributions, including Ubuntu and Fedora, use Upstart by default, or as with Debian, can be easily switched to using it. For more information about Upstart, see The H feature Faster booting with Upstart.
Other than that change, openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4 is more of a series of software updates. The new release includes NetworkManager 0.8 which improves operation with GSM connections and handles connections over Bluetooth. GNOME has been updated to the release candidate for the upcoming version 2.30 and KDE has been updated to version 4.4.1.
OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4 is available to download as a DVD image or Live CD with a GNOME or KDE desktop. There will be three more milestones and an expected two release candidates before the finished version of openSUSE 11.3 is released on the 15th of July.
