PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 now available
The PCLinuxOS development team has released the KDE version of the 2011.6 Edition of its beginner-friendly Linux distribution. The distribution's goal is to be "radically simple" and easy to use.
PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 is based on the 2.6.38.8 Linux kernel and includes the latest 4.6.4 release of KDE, a maintenance update to the 4.6 branch from earlier this month. The 2011 released has received a "full makeover", adding a new brushed metal theme and new application splash screens. The OpenOffice Manager has been replaced with LibreOffice Manager – due to the limited size of the LiveCD ISO, the office suite is not included but can be installed through the LibreOffice Manager.
Package updates include the latest Firefox 5 release, Thunderbird 3.1.11, version 2.9.0 of the Pidgin IM client, and VLC Media Player 1.1.10, as well as X.org Server 1.10.2, Mesa 7.10.3 and version 4.5.2 of the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). The developers note that a 64-bit only version will be available "in the coming weeks".
Further information about the release can be found in the official release announcement. At the time of writing, the PCLinuxOS KDE Desktop download page is in the process of being updated and doesn't yet link to the latest version; until the page is updated, users can download PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 from a mirror. Existing PCLinuxOS users should receive the updates via the built-in update functionality.
