Parted Magic 4.9 arrives

Parted Magic developer Patrick Verner has announced the release of version 4.9 of the open source Parted Magic, multi-platform partitioning tool. Parted Magic can be used to create, move, delete and resize drive partitions and will run on a machine with as little as 64MB of RAM. File systems supported include NTFS, FAT, ReiserFS, Reiser4 and HFS+, LVM and RAID are also supported. The latest 4.9 release is based on the 2.6.32.9 Linux kernel and includes several bug fixes, updates and changes.

Parted Magic 4.9 features the addition of three new programs, including mhdd, elinks and zsync, and the removal of all of the old IDE drivers from the kernel, so all hard disk devices will appear as sd* rather than hd* and CDROM/DVD drives will be sr*. The fstab daemon has also been fixed to support virtio hard disks. Package updates include version 3.07 of the rsync utility, GParted 0.5.2, version 0.2.0 of Partclone partition image utility, NTFS-3G 2010.3.6 and FSArchiver 0.6.8.

The developers have removed Google's Chrome Beta for Linux, which was introduced in version 2.7 and added Chromium, replacing Firefox as the included browser. Verner says that the change was the result of user feedback.
