The KDE project has announced Project Neon, an effort to provide daily builds of KDE modules for Kubuntu. The aim of this is to give developers and testers the ability to easily install cutting edge builds of programs from the KDE Software Collection without the risk of creating problems in their working KDE desktop environment.

When using the Project Neon builds, users do not need to expend time and resources to build development snapshots themselves. This should speed up testing of KDE software as it significantly lowers the barrier of entry to get hold of development versions of programs. According to the Project Neon pages on the Kubuntu wiki, these packages have to be considered unstable and very experimental but they should install without risking the rest of a KDE installation.

The Project Neon team is also providing a KVM image to make it easier to test a complete KDE installation without any risk to production environments. The image is a distribution made up from the project's daily build images and is mostly intended for users who do not have a compatible Kubuntu installation available. The Project Neon KVM images will be built weekly and can be deployed on KVM installations with at least 2GB of RAM.

The Project Neon packages can be installed from a Personal Package Archive (PPA) and usage instructions are available on the project's wiki. The Project Neon KVM images can be downloaded from Kubuntu's Amazon Web Services instance.
