SUSE announces OpenStack-based cloud solution

SUSE, a division of Attachmate, has announced the release of an early development snapshot of its OpenStack-based cloud infrastructure solution. According to the company, SUSE Cloud is "the industry's first, fully configured, OpenStack-powered appliance based on OpenStack's latest version".

The development preview is based on the current release of the open source cloud platform – the OpenStack project's fourth release (2011.3) code-named "Diablo" – and runs on top of version 11 SP1 of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES). The stack includes the Nova controller, the Glance image service and the Keystone identity service, as well as the OpenStack Dashboard.

Launched in July 2010 by Rackspace and Nasa, OpenStack is an Apache-licensed project whose mission is to create an open source cloud computing platform that can meet the needs of both public and private clouds, regardless of size, while also being highly scalable and easy to implement. The cloud software has already gained backing from more than 110 companies including Dell, Citrix, AMD, Intel, HP and Ubuntu sponsor Canonical.
