Scala provider Typesafe raises $14 million

Typesafe, the company that packages the open source Scala language, Akka middleware and Play framework as a JVM-based stack for enterprises, has raised $14 million in "series B" funding from Shasta Ventures, Juniper Networks and Greylock Partners. The new money is to be targeted at growing the company to the next stage in its development. Jeff Lipton, Juniper VP for venture and strategic planning, said its investment, made through its Junos Innovation Fund, was about allowing the company to "leverage the most recent advances in large-scale parallel processing and distributed computing while building on existing investments in Java".

The company was created in May 2011 with Scala creator Martin Odersky and Akka creator Jonas Bonér as co-founders. In November 2011 Typesafe integrated the Play 2.0 framework and brought its creator, Guillaume Bort, onto its advisory board. The three components make up the Scala stack that Typesafe offers subscription support, and training and consultation services around. The H recently talked with Odersky about Scala, its future, Typesafe and the developments taking place in the Scala ecosystem at Scala Days 2012.
