Second alpha of Moblin for netbooks released
Following the first alpha version of Moblin v2 in early February, the Intel founded Moblin project has released a second alpha. The release includes an updated kernel (2.6.29-rc7), improvements to the graphics framework Clutter and revisions to the Moblin Image Creator (MIC2). Support for the MSI Wind netbook has also been added. The desktop environments have been updated to version 4.6 of Xfce and version 2.26 RC of GNOME.
The release supports Intel's Atom and Core 2 Processors with Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extension 3 (SSSE3). The second alpha release is available to download. VMWare and KVM virtual machine images are also available for users interested in testing the release on a standard desktop.
The Moblin project is competing with other mobile Linux-based operating systems such as Google's Android, the LiMo Foundation and OpenMoko – however, these releases are aimed primarily at smartphones.
