Second beta for openSUSE 12.2 released

The developers at the openSUSE project have published a second beta of version 12.2 of their openSUSE Linux distribution. According to Jos Poortvliet, openSUSE Community Manager, there have been more than "800 changes in Factory in June"; Factory is the project's name for the current development branch.

The most notable of these in the Beta 2 release include upgrading to the 3.4.2 Linux kernel and GCC 4.7.1, as well as the recent KDE SC 4.8.4 update. The Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client have also both been updated to version 13.0.1. At the time of writing, the most annoying bugs page has yet to be updated with a list of known issues for the second beta, which was not originally part of the 12.2 roadmap.

The new beta release comes less than one week after Poortvliet confirmed that the final version of openSUSE 12.2 would be delayed. This was done, Poortvliet says, in order to evaluate the project's growing pains and other issues related to the release process. The final release of 12.2 was originally scheduled to arrive on 11 July, but has now been pushed back until mid-September.

Further information about the beta can found in the announcement news post. The second beta of openSUSE 12.2 can be downloaded as a DVD image for 32- and 64-bit systems. Those testing the release are asked to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find. The current stable release is openSUSE 12.1 from November 2011.
