Subtitles come to Miro 3.0

Miro, the open source Internet TV / podcast downloader and player, has been updated to version 3.0 and is now able to display embedded or standalone subtitles for videos. When a video is playing in Miro 3, a drop down menu displays any automatically located subtitles. Alternatively, the user can select their own subtitle files.

The developers say they have also made performance improvements such that launching Miro is 150% faster and torrents download more efficiently. Other changes in Miro 3.0 include a new maximum volume (twice as high as before) designed for playback on laptops, file information editing and the option to launch and play videos in other applications outside Miro.

Miro 3.0 has been joined by Miro Video Converter, a new application for converting video from many formats to MP4, Ogg Theora or to device specific formats. More details about the release can be found in the release notes. A new user guide is also available which explains Miro's features. Miro 3.0 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, while the Video Converter is only available for Windows and Mac. Miro source code is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2) and is sponsored by the Participatory Culture Foundation, a non-profit organisation.
