Version 3.0.0 of SystemRescueCd introduces support for modularly extending the system and UEFI booting to the Linux distribution for administering and repairing systems. With SRM modules (System Rescue Modules), additional programs with their dependencies, files and data can each be contained in a single squashfs filesystem with a .srm extension. When the system boots, these .srm files are all mounted automatically. Users can add the reusable .srm files to their SystemRescueCD systems as needed to customise their system.

As the feature is still very new, only one official SRM file has been made available so far: Firefox 10.0.6, the Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox. Further information, including details on how to create and add SRM modules, can be found on the new Modules page.

Support for booting on x86_64 systems that use the BIOS-replacement UEFI has been added through the GRUB 2.00 bootloader release. The new version of the Gentoo-based operating system sees its standard kernel upgraded to 3.2.28, while the alternative kernel has been upgraded to the more recent 3.4.9 release.

Other changes include upgrading the e2fsprogs filesystem utilities to 1.42.5, the addition of new OpenSSH tools and the Open Virtual Machine Tools (open-vm-tools) for VMware guests. The bundled partitioning tools have also been updated, with the Gnome PARTition EDitor (GParted) being upgraded to version 0.13.1 and the 0.2.50 release of the Partclone partition image utility included.

More details about this new version can be found in the change log. SystemRescueCd 3.0.0 is available to download as a 347MB ISO image file, and a Quick Start guide and Online Manual are provided. Hosted on SourceForge, SystemRescueCd is licensed under the GPLv2.
