Tizen logo The Tizen project has released updated sources for its mobile operating system along with an SDK. Formed by the merger of LiMo and MeeGo, Tizen is an open source OS for smartphones, tablets, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI ) systems, TV hardware and netbooks. The project issued a first pre-release version in January; both Tizen and the SDK are still in beta.

The SDK can now be used with 32-bit versions of Windows as well as Ubuntu Linux. The Tizen Web UI framework has extended jQuery Mobile to simplify the development of web applications through optimised widgets. The developers have also added features, such as support for retrieving system information, setting an alarm and accessing media content to the Tizen Web API.

The Tizen project is hosted by the Linux Foundation. Together with the Tizen Association, the Linux Foundation recently announced that networking and telecommunications specialist Huawei has joined the Tizen Association's board of directors. The aim of the industry association is to promote Tizen. In addition to founding members Intel and Samsung, the board includes NEC Casio, NTT Docomo, Orange, Panasonic, SK Telecom, Telefonica and Vodafone representatives.

In a call for papers, the Tizen project has invited contributors to submit proposals for the upcoming Tizen conference, which will take place from 7 to 9 May in San Francisco at the Hyatt Regency. Its organisers say that the conference is aimed at Tizen developers, app developers, platform designers, OEMs and open source enthusiasts, as well as hardware and software vendors.
