Transmission BitTorrent client supports Retina display

Existing users should be prompted to upgrade the next time they launch Transmission In the latest major update to their open source BitTorrent client, the developers at the Transmission Project have mainly focused on enhancements that affect Mac users. The 2.60 release of the peer-to-peer file sharing client adds support for the new Retina display (HiDPI) in Apple's latest MacBook Pro laptop and is, the developers say, now ready for the Gatekeeper security feature in Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, which is expected to arrive later this month.

This means that, on Mac, the application has been signed with an Apple-issued Developer ID; according to the changeset, Transmission is signed with an ID from "Digital Ignition LLC". With Gatekeeper, users who download and install applications that have been signed will no longer receive an alert warning them that it comes from an unknown source and could be malicious. Support for the window restoration feature under Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and the addition of a filter and select all/deselect all buttons in the add window are among the other Mac-specific changes.

On all supported platforms, the developers have fixed problems when adding magnet links, improved scraping behaviour, and updated the MiniUPnPC and uTorrent Transport Protocol (libutp) libraries. The web client has been updated to add download and seed completion notifications on supported browsers, and re-implements "select all" and "deselect all" buttons under the file inspector tab. Compilation issues affecting Solaris and FreeBSD have also been corrected.

A full list of fixes and improvements can be found in the change log. Transmission 2.60 is available to download from the project's site for a number of platforms including Mac OS X and Linux. Binaries and source for Transmission are dual-licensed under the MIT licence and the GPLv2.
