Vico editor for Mac OS X open sourced

The developer of Vico, a Mac OS X text editor, has announced that the previously closed-source and proprietary application is being open sourced under a BSD-like licence. Vico's author, Martin Hedenfalk, said that development on the vi-keystroke-compatible editor had mostly stalled and he was not able to spend time on developing it.

Because of his grander plans for the editor, Hedenfalk has decided to release the source code on github, remove the application from Apple's Mac App Store and make a new binary version available to download with its previous trial restrictions removed. The application would probably have to have been removed from the App Store anyway, as it was incompatible with the incoming sandboxing requirements that Apple is demanding for store apps.

Beyond vi-compatible keystrokes, vico offers support for editing HTML, PHP, Ruby and JavaScript files and can make use of existing TextMate bundles. An integrated SFTP client, split views, file explorer, fuzzy find and ctags support are also incorporated. Vico is scriptable with the Nu language.
