Ubuntu 7.10 approaches end-of-life
The Ubuntu developers have announced that the 18th of April, 2009 will be the official end-of-life date for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), which was released almost 18 months ago, on the 18th of October, 2007. Gutsy Gibbon was the first Ubuntu release to include Compiz 3D effects enabled by default and included GNOME version 2.20.
Gutsy Gibbon users are advised to upgrade to version 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support) or to version 8.10 to continue receiving updates. The LTS versions of Ubuntu are supported for three years for the desktop releases and five years for server releases. The standard releases are supported for 18 months of updates for both the desktop and server versions.
The first beta for the next version of Ubuntu, 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, is expected to be released this week on the 26th. The final version of Jaunty Jackalope is expected to be released next month on the 23rd of April. Ubuntu is sponsored by UK based Canonical Ltd.
