W3C: HTML5 standardisation gets financial backing

W3C's HTML5 logo The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) has announced that Adobe, Google and Microsoft are commiting to sponsorship that will enable the W3C to lay on additional staff to support the HTML Working Group's activities. This includes filling the editorial chair left empty by Ian "Hixie" Hickson who recently confirmed he would be working exclusively on the WHATWG HTML Living Standard and ending his work on the W3C HTML5 standard. Beyond noting that the funding will cover "editing several specifications and developing several tests", details of the funding and allocation were not given.

The W3C is currently advertising the post for a "Technical Editor for HTML Working Group" as a one year contract with possible renewal. An April Call for Editors appears not to have attracted an immediate response. The chairs of the W3C HTML Working Group hope to finalise a stable HTML5 standard by 2014 and, while finalising that standard, be looking at possible future HTML features. WHATWG's Living Standard is expected to have accelerated its development by then and already be incorporating many of those future HTML features.
