jQuery Mobile Beta 1 brings expanded platform support

The first beta for jQuery Mobile 1.0 further extends platform support The jQuery development team has published a first beta of jQuery Mobile 1.0, a version of the framework optimised for touch interfaces on smartphones and tablets. According to the jQuery Mobile team, the latest development version will be followed by a second beta in "about a month" and a stable 1.0 release is expected to arrive in "late summer" of this year.

jQuery Mobile Beta 1 expands platform support to include both BlackBerry 5 devices and those running Opera Mini – the mobile framework already includes support for a variety of platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry 6, Windows Phone 7 and WebOS. Support for Nokia’s Symbian S60 platform is targeted for the second beta release.

In Beta 1, the URL bar can now be hidden on iOS and Android devices to avoid multiple re-draws. Page transitions have been pulled out into a separate plug-in so that they can be decoupled from the navigation plug-in, and are now said to be smoother. Other changes include URL handling improvements and updates to the navigation core. The developers also note that the automatic toolbar back button is now disabled by default, responsive design helper classes are now deprecated, and pinch-to-zoom has been restored in the demos for Beta 1.
