Code Bubbles plans to be open source later this year

Source: Andre Brangdon Code Bubbles is a new IDE concept which breaks code down into visually linked bubbles of methods and working sets of data, and displays them in a two dimensional pannable and zoomable continuous workspace. In an interview with Dzone, Andrew Brangdon, who has led the development of Code Bubbles while working towards his Ph.D., said that they plan to release the code as open source later this year and that before then it will be available as a free plug-in for existing Eclipse installations.

Code Bubbles, currently written in C# and WPF, is being ported to Java and Swing during the upcoming beta release. This will allow it to be used on more platforms than just Windows. A video on YouTube has a demonstration of the current development version of Code Bubbles, showing how a user can navigate and lay out the bubbles, opening JavaDoc bubbles and marking code for work with task bubbles. Papers on the design of Code Bubbles are due to be presented in April at the 28th International Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems and May at the 32nd International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE).
