Open Recall: Games, emulators and multimedia

Galitz's emulator runs a variety of Game Boy titles from the past

Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth the linkage. Open Recall collates the interesting stories that didn't quite make the cut. This edition is all about games and multimedia software.

• JavaScript Game Boy emulator – Developer Grant Galitz has released a Game Boy Color emulator written entirely in HTML5 and JavaScript. The web site works with Firefox 4 or newer, Chrome 18 or newer and versions of Safari from 5.1.5 onwards. The emulator works with games provided on the web site and users can use their own Game Boy ROMs by dragging and dropping them into the program. Source code for the emulator is licensed under the GPLv2 and is available on GitHub.

• XBMC and Ouya – The makers of the open source Ouya games console – who recently wrapped up their Kickstarter campaign by reaching a total of $8.5 million in funding – have announced that they will be partnering with the makers of the open source XBMC media centre to bring the software to the console. The XBMC developers will get early access to a prototype device to make sure their software is successfully ported to the console. For those users who prefer the Plex media centre, the company behind Ouya has said that their console will also support that application.
  

• PCSX2 1.0 – The developers of PCSX2 PlayStation 2 emulator have announced the release version 1.0 of their open source program "after many long years of development". The developers say that a majority of PlayStation 2 games now run without problems and that the things they want to fix at this point would require rewrites of large parts of the PCSX2 code. They plan to approach these issues as part of the development of the next major version of the software.

• Stereoscopic image viewer – The latest release of the Geeqie image viewer has added support for stereoscopic images. It can display single images, anaglyph, two images side-by-side and in mirror mode. It also supports 3D TVs. The software is available for Linux as an RPM package and its source code is licensed under the GPLv2.
