Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS released
The Ubuntu team has released Ubuntu 8.04.2, the second maintenance update to the "long term support" (LTS) version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, released in April 2008. The new release includes over two hundred updates, covering a range of bugs and security issues. The LTS updates focus on improving stability and compatibility.
Among the major issues addressed are issues with Samba during installation and a race condition in gvfs. A fix for issues with hard disk power management is also included, which adjusts parameters on laptop hard disks depending on if the laptop is on AC, or battery power. This fix is noted as only partial and a more complete fix is now scheduled for a future update, namely 8.04.3.
Other improvements include more HAL support for GPRS modems in a range of Nokia phones, backports of drivers for e1000e and igb from later Linux kernel releases and a driver for the MacBook Air and Pro multi touch touchpad. There are also numerous application updates. Full details are listed in the release notes and disk images may be downloaded from the Ubuntu site.
